A civilised site at the edge of an incredible wilderness

Inverpollaidh is an incredible landscape, even by the standards of the Scottish Highlands: sugar-loaf mountain peaks erupt from the moors, lochs shine like molten stepping-stones across the wilderness, and otters chomp on salmon beside crashing waterfalls. You might think this is beautiful enough, but you then realise it’s all adjacent to an equally amazing seascape, complete with islands, cliffs, hidden coves and sandy beaches... and then you pretty much run out of superlatives.

Astonishingly, this corner of the country has been without a proper campsite for several years – until Catriona and David Last decided to turn a section of the family croft into a new site. The location could hardly be better: a decent-sized strip of land stretching from the local pub (which they also own) to the beach, with hills all around and views out to Isle Ristol.

They have gone the extra mile here to ensure that you have a good time, levelling the pitches, installing a few hook-ups and building one of the loveliest toilet and shower blocks you’ll find in any campsite in the country, with the result that the site offers the best balance of wilderness and civilisation you could hope for.You can sit in your tent and look out at the seals loafing on the rocks or scramble up the hill for an uninterrupted view of the island-studded western ocean; you can also enjoy a steaming hot shower, do your laundry, and pop your milk in the fridge before sauntering up to the pub for an evening’s live music. Something tells us that this is a site that will be around for a long, long time...

Food and drink

The campsite is on the croft opposite the local pub, Am Fuaran (01854 622339), and shares the same owners. In fact, owner David also fishes for shellfish from his boat at Old Dornie, so bag something fresh for the BBQ or head to the pub to sample langoustine, squat lobster or crab, straight off the boat.
