Gambledown Farm

Sweet farming life in the utmost canvas comfort
It's hard to put a finger on. Maybe it's the country air abuzz with pirouetting butterflies; Or maybe it's the curious mooing of the resident cows that herald your arrival. Whatever sums it up, some places you arrive at and instantly know that what awaits will be amongst the most relaxing and care-free times you're ever likely to spend. Gambledown Farm perfectly fits the bill.

Nestled between the sleepy Hampshire villages of Sherfield English and Lockerly, Gambledown is the Arnison-Newgass family's extensive working farm-cum-glamping-paradise. The views from its enviably elevated vantage point are ridiculously picturesque, taking in the historic Test Valley to the New Forest and beyond The Solent to the Isle of Wight.

Camping at Gambledown Farm is all about freedom and space with a healthily large dollop of luxury on the side. Set up by the experienced folk of Feather Down Farms it has a blend of tried and tested glamping comforts alongside a laid back agricultural setting. The littl'uns will love running around the lush, sun-drenched field, riding their bikes along the long farm track, monkeying around on the rope swing, and exploring the surrounding pockets of woodland – scattered with bluebells in springtime.

Meanwhile, the tents themselves, aptly named 'Canvas Lodges', are an impressively furnished combination of camping canvas and more permanent-feeling wooden floors and cabinets. Campers can turn up with nothing but a toothbrush and easily settle in amongst the oak coffee tables and bronze candle fittings, lifting a finger only to stoke the wood burner and throw a few more sausages on the barbecue. It sort of sums up the theme here. You can chill into a snooze on your lodge's sofa or run like a wild thing in the surrounding fields. Or both. We don't mind.

Gambledown is still very much a working farm, though, and campers are lucky enough to sample some of hosts, Richard and Tamara's, very own produce during their stay, including free-range eggs and veg from the Gambledown patch. The farm's mix of arable and livestock means you can expect to mingle with Shorthorn cattle, chickens and sheep as well as keeping your eyes peeled for some of the more unofficial lodgers, like foxes and badgers. They all have their place here on the farm, though none can quite compete with those peerless canvas lodges.
